Middle School Sandwich Shop

Middle School Sandwich Shop

Hands-On Business Math

Once a month, middle school turns into a lunch delivery service for the grades students at Da Vinci Waldorf School.  Students and staff (and parents!) look forward to these special days, when they don’t have to pack a lunch and get to customize their orders with fun, seasonal and healthy options.  Our 7/8 grade teacher, Kristine Fiskum, sat down with Da Vinci Storyteller & Graphic Designer, Nicole Javvaji, to explain the reason behind this unique middle school sandwich shop – the S.S.S. Express!

Ms. Fiskum: The S.S.S. Express was born last year during the middle school Business Math block. The students came up with the idea, the name (sandwiches, salads, soup), and even wrote a little ditty to promote its success. It has been a great way to practice budgeting, handling money, pricing, marketing and service.

Nicole Javvaji: The class performed a “commercial” live for the students at the start of last year, and we are still singing that catchy jingle!  “S.S.S. Express!  No more lunch time stress!”

Does the money go back to the school?

Ms. Fiskum: It is a fundraiser for an 8th grade celebration chosen by the class. This year 6th grade joined the fun and learning.  All profits are held by the classes to use when the class is in 8th grade. Each year a third of the holdings is for that year’s 8th grade class. We hope to keep it alive and add 6th grade classes for years to come.
