Storyteller, author, and playwright Michael Hedley Burton visited our school this past week and treated the children and faculty alike to his storytelling. Originally from New Zealand, he now makes his home in Sydney, Australia. Students from Early Childhood through eighth grade were spellbound as Mr. Burton enlivened stories, poetry, and Shakespeare through his artistry of the spoken word.
He did an incredible job of reaching the children. During "The Selfish Giant"—a wonderful story about the transformative qualities of the human being—the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders were so engaged that they were literally leaning forward out of their seats! The 6th, 7th and 8th graders were given the gift of "Shakespeare Simplified" from Michael, while the early childhood students, 1st graders and 2nd graders were enchanted by the tale of "The Very Old Donkey."
Michael also did some restorative and pedagogical speech work with the faculty after the school day was finished. It was an incredible gift for everyone who was fortunate enough to experience Mr. Burton, and we are greatly appreciative for his wonderful visit!
