Inspiring Life-long Learning for Over 25 Years
The Joy of Joining In
What do ironing, washing dishes, and making applesauce have in common? In our Early Childhood classrooms, they’re all part of the joyful work and play of childhood!
Young children naturally love to imitate the adults around them. In Wonder Garden, this curiosity comes alive as children join their teachers in ironing silks, folding laundry, carrying water for painting, and washing dishes. Meanwhile, children in Sunflower Garden and Apple Blossom Garden have been busy polishing and chopping apples to make fresh applesauce to enjoy together.
In Waldorf Early Childhood education, these familiar activities become rich opportunities for learning through imitation and hands-on experience. Children develop coordination, concentration, independence, and confidence while discovering the pleasure of doing something useful alongside others.
There’s no sharp dividing line between work and play at this age. A simple everyday activity can become an adventure, a chance to practice a new skill, and an opportunity to feel part of something bigger.
Sometimes the most meaningful learning grows from something wonderfully simple: a child’s natural delight in discovering what they’re capable of.
