We celebrated Santa Lucia this past Friday. The oldest girl at Da Vinci Waldorf School led the procession, her head adorned with lit candles in remembrance of Santa Lucia.

Santa Lucia was an Italian saint from the island of Sicily. She is the complement to St. Nicholas during this time of Advent, representing Divine Love. She comes to the children through song, rather than through the spoken word. In the Swedish tradition, Santa Lucia brings light in the time of darkness. She brings light and nourishment, presenting all the children with baked sweet bread on this day.

It is said that to vividly celebrate this day will help one live through the long winter days with enough inward light.Img_4943
