Next week we will build an altar to celebrate Day of the Dead at our school. Grades students will learn about this primarily-Mexican celebration of deceased loved ones at assembly. The children will make decorations for the altar in class this week. We will celebrate in true Mexican style with adorned skulls and skeletons, colorful marigolds, traditional cut-out paper decorations, candles and more. Children are invited to bring pictures or other favorite items of people (and/or pets) in their lives who've passed. It is also very typical to put offerings of fruit on the altar, so feel welcome to send in a piece of fruit as well.
Grades students will be invited to place their items on the altar on Wednesday and Thursday, November 1st and 2nd.
The altar will be up all week, so feel free to come to see and add to it throughout the week. Each Grades class will enjoy pan de muerto (bread of the dead) and mini sugar skulls (sorry, it's traditional!) as well.
