2nd Grade – Recess Snow Fort
Our resourceful second graders gathered as many flakes of snow as they could find to build a snow fort during the thaw in mid-January.
2nd Grade – Mandarin
The second graders have been working on acting out “Go, Dog, Go!,” which they now know well enough to draw out as a ”comic”.
2nd Grade – Movement
Second graders having fun making an igloo during movement class with Mrs. Faden.
2nd Grade – Parts of Speech
The second grade has been exploring parts of speech through fables! From Jataka (or Buddha) tales to those of the great poet, Rumi, the second graders have been hearing all about how even the greatest of leaders can learn about love, friendship, honesty and compassion. These stories lend themselves quite nicely to the introduction of three main parts of speech and, of course, great discussion.
The entire school celebrated Santa Lucia Day on December 13.
Santa Lucia was an Italian saint from the island of Sicily. Santa Lucia is the complement to St. Nicholas during this time of Advent. Santa Lucia represents Divine Love and comes to the children with song rather than spoken word. In the Swedish tradition, Santa Lucia brings light in the time of darkness. Her head is crowned with lit candles, and she brings light and nourishment, presenting all the children with baked sweet bread on this day.
Chorus for the song “Santa Lucia”
Symbol of love sublime
Moving o’er space and time
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia
Into this winter night,
Come, maid of shining light
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia
2nd Grade – Geography
As the students continue to awaken to their place in the world we slowly broaden our perspective in geography. Last year we immersed ourselves in the seasons of Illinois and all the animals, weather, and festivities that go along with them. This year we learned about the people who lived here before us and how they took care of things so that we could enjoy them later. We did this through the oral tradition of Native American folktales, just like our ancestors did. To further enliven the experience, parents and grandparents were asked to reflect on their student and choose a spirit animal guide which the student would be presented with. Each child was then given the opportunity to create a new name for themselves in honor of their new responsibility.
Pictured from left to right we have:
Listening Bat, Joyful Rabbit, Sparring Mouse, Daring Crow, Organizing Bee, Searching Wolf (down in front), Charging Goat, Singing Hummingbird with Running Puma behind her, Busy Coyote with Soaring Woodpecker behind him, and Swift Dragonfly.
2nd Grade – Inspiring Stories
Second grade began the year with the inspiring stories of holy people from around the world. These stories help to remind us of the highest ideals of human nature.
2nd Grade – Play
The second graders presented their play to kick off this year’s Martinmas Lantern Walk for the Grades students.
