Students were very excited on Tuesday, as the careful burning of the prairie grasses at the back of the schoolyard was performed. The burn extended beyond the end of the school day and many students remained with their parents afterward to watch the fires dwindle away. This practice is known as “prescribed burning” and helps our prairie grasses thrive. More information on prescribed burning can be found at at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources here.

Today the Sunflower Garden Early Childhood class celebrated the students who will be going to the First Grade in the fall. Each child holds a puppet that they sewed for the puppet show they performed for their classmates and parents as part of the festivities. These students will share a classroom with the current first grade students who were also in attendance for the celebration. The students stand with their teacher, Donna Brooks (left) and her assistant, Nicole Griffith (right).
