5th & 6th Grades: Starved Rock State Park

The fifth and sixth graders enjoyed a trip to Starved Rock State Park near Oglesby, Illinois this week, enriching their study of geology with real-world exploration. They enjoyed hiking French Canyon and Tonty Canyon (especially the waterfall.) They also toured the Illinois Waterway visitor center.

Starved Rock is among the highest elevations in Illinois. It is a gray, cylindrical pillar of St. Peter sandstone, which is named after the St. Peter River in Minnesota, where this particular variety of sandstone was discovered. The rock formation that includes Starved Rock spans north and south from Minnesota to Missouri and east and west from Illinois into Nebraska and South Dakota!
